Brazil recycles only 3 % of urban garbage

Brazil recycles only 3 % of the garbage urbanoApenas 3 % of the solid waste produced in Brazilian cities are recycled , although one third of all potentially recyclable urban garbage . The situation was presented in debate 23 in Brasilia , the Temporary Solid Waste Subcommittee , attached to the Commission for the Environment , Consumer Protection and Surveillance and Control ( CMA ) , the Senate .

As Carlos Roberto Vieira Filho , director of the Brazilian Association of Public Cleaning and Special Waste , the country produces 63 million tons of solid waste per year, and the fifth largest generator of urban waste.

The director explains that Brazil produces 383 pounds of waste per capita per year, which grew 21 % over the last ten years , while the national population increased 9.6% in the same period . Roberto Carlos reported that 60 % of Brazilian municipalities have " any action " selective collection .

- However , this does not mean that they have selective collection throughout the territory or have formalized program door to door , but only that the council is open to the theme - noted.

The distance between theory and practice was exemplified by Roney Alves da Silva , representative of the National Movement of Recyclable Materials . As stated , the material from the bins in Brasilia is dumped into landfills and there are scavengers collecting the material in the open and without proper structure.

" Selective collection is not only paint the green truck . It is the people separate their waste at home and on alternate days , collect the dry and organic , allocate hazardous to specific collection points and so on . Unfortunately it did not. Today selective collection goes to the Structural Dump , where the material is separated by scavengers , if rain, in the rain , and if the sun is the sun, " Roney said .
